Festive Gadgets

Festive Gadgets

Though some of us may not want to admit it just yet, the festive period truly is just around the corner. So, whilst some of the population have finished their Christmas shopping and another part don’t even want to think about it until come Christmas eve, if you’re in the middle ground percentage that want to get your ideas together, then we have some perfect ones for you.

Whether it’s for the kids, for a friend, sibling partner or parent, technology is always a great gift. But with so much on the market, where do you begin?

Well firstly, who are you buying for? It’s no good getting your teenager a bog standard basic laptop as they’ll just push it to it’s limits and moan that it’s not a MacBook! Or are you buying for you mum whose last phone was an infamous Nokia brick?

We’ve taken a look at the top technical gadgets this year that’ll keep everyone merry this festive season!

So firstly, let’s consider the laptops. Whether it’s a child going off to university, a present to keep your mum up to date and online or even just a little gift from you to you, a new laptop is always a winner.

You don’t want to break the bank, but you want something that’ll wow your loved ones.

As far as tablets go, the obvious choice in an Apple iPad.

If you want to splash that bit extra cash you could go iPad Pro, or if you wanted a little basic device for the kids, an iPad mini. But the middle ground would the latest iPad 2017.

The 2017 iPad comes in 3 colours, space grey, gold and silver, 32GB or 128GB of storage, 2GB RAM, and a 9.7inch 1536 x 2048 pixel display.

The camera isn’t anything staggering, but an 8MP rear and 1.2MP front camera, it’s more than enough for the type of device the iPad aims to be. If you’re torn between a iPad Pro for 2016 or the iPad 2017, there’s a more in depth review here.

It’s the perfect gift for younger kids to keep them entertained with controlled and secure games and gadgets, or a user-friendly device for mum or dad to get their heads around.

Other available options include the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, Microsoft Surface Pro 4, Google Pixel C and more. There’s a tablet out there to suit every user.

Sometimes a tablet simply isn’t enough. Whether it be to work, for more storage or simply preference, a laptop is the answer.

With so many distributors out there, how can you be sure you’re getting the right laptop to suit your needs?

Unless you’re an avid gamer, a constantly on the move business person or an inspired designer, most of us can cope with a regular day to day run around – but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring!

The HP Pavilion x360 14-ba008na Convertible Laptop is far from boring. It’s fantastic 360 feature makes this device the perfect mix between a tablet and a laptop.

This stunning device sports a 14-inch 1366×768 touch screen display. With 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage on an SSD hard drive, there’s more than enough space for your photos, documents and memories.

It comes with the latest Windows 10 operating system and an intel core i3-7100U processor to keep you running with the latest updates.

Whilst there are more business suited laptops, like an HP EliteBook and more gaming based laptops like the HP Omen, this is your perfect all rounder with that essential fancy flare.

Running in at £499 currently on the HP store, it’s not a bad price either!

Smart Phone

Now, as an iPhone user myself, the easiest and most obvious option most people would jump to here is the all new iPhone X – however the price tag that comes with it of £999 just isn’t worth it (in my opinion). I myself am more likely to go for the iPhone 8 or even 7 dependant upon contract pricing.

However, my most impressive phone this year, and the best possible smartphone for Christmas would have to be the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. They’re innovative, exciting and just down right impressive. I would be swayed by the Galaxy Note 8, but the extra cost for the few extra features, and what the majority of us need out of a phone, the S8 more than covers us.

I’ve gone quite in depth over my awe of the Samsung Galaxy S8 in the past, which you can read more on here, but this phone is without a doubt my most impressive phone of the year, and it’s literally £400 cheaper than an iPhone X!

The edge to edge infinity display is seamless, colours on the 5.8inch QUAD-HD screen simply pop and the sleek modern design is incredibly endearing.

With 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, with the ability to include a microSD for further storage, there’s more than enough space to store the gorgeous pictures the 12MP rear view camera provides.

The only thing taking it’s time to get completely up and running is the AI Bixby, but they’ve set extremely high hopes on Bixby’s abilities, so it’s not surprising Samsung didn’t release a half-hearted version just to appease those expecting it upon release.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 comes in at £689 from the Samsung website, however various deals and prices are available from differing UK phone providers.

With so many available cameras and camera phone quality becoming greater with every year, it’s almost impossible to guess which camera would be most suited to each individual.

You also then have your camera brands; Canon, Nikon, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Sony, Olympus – the list goes on, and don’t you dare buy a die-hard Canon fan a Nikon, you’ll have a family feud on your hands within minutes!

The kind of camera I’ve gone for here is an entry level, compact DSLR camera that falls under the Sony bracket – hopefully not offending anyone!

It has a fair price tag to it, but in comparison to many cameras, for what you get it’s a small price to pay.

The Sony a6000 is quite frankly staggering. It produces 24.3 mega pixel shots and 1080p HD video, continuous shooting of up to 11 frames per second and a shutter speed of 1/4000 to 1/4000. The camera itself weighs a measly 285g and supports various lenses – making it the perfect starting camera for anyone new to photography.

It’s price tag of £515 may seem quite steep, but who knows Black Friday could surprise us once again (we hope)!

Other options of cameras perfect for travel and entry level users can be found in more depth here.

Now depending on your gift receiver this could also be a touch and go choice. With the recent release of the XBox One X, quoted to be the most powerful games console yet, that’s a clear obvious choice, but also comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

Then there’s the PlayStation 4 Pro, with all the Sony exclusives it’s also a solid choice, but there are very few gamers out there that wouldn’t give you a definitive favourite when it comes to XBox and PlayStation.

Therefore my chosen games console for 2017, also the console that won the Product of the Year awards at the ‘Trusted Reviews Awards 2017’, is the Nintendo Switch.

Now I know what many people will be thinking, Nintendo is for kids, but it’s much more than that. The brand exclusives Nintendo carry, such as Super Mario, Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Zelda have really blown it out of the water this time around, and the Switch itself packs the best of a console and handheld device into one. It’s clear, crisp and just a lot of fun!

It’s multiplayer feature also makes it a great device to have around the festive season. It’s also coming this Christmas, with a far smaller price tag than the big dogs, costing £279.99 from most retailers.

For further information on the Switch, read more here.

Whatever you choose, technology is always a fantastic gift to give every holiday season! And as it’s just around the corner – get ready, get set, shop!
